The south west of Germany is home to an unbelievable amount of excellent green roof projects. The fact that Stuttgart alone houses over 300,000 m2 of green rooftops says a lot. Here more than anywhere else, ecological architecture is consistently achieved by means of landscaped rooftops.
More than 1.5 million m2 of green roofs are currently being planned and will be realised over the next few decades. These projects are accompanied by a civic green roof support programme, which has been providing voluntary green roof initiatives with financial support since 1986.
Excursions in and around Stuttgart and the German solar capital, Freiburg, use individual case studies to show the various ways in which green roofs can be applied within the context of modern town planning.
